Jetsun Milarepa
Jetsun Milarepa (1052-1135) was a Tibetan siddha, or yogi, whose life story is famous in Tibetan culture. A murderer in his youth, Milarepa devoted himself to Dharma practice and became a buddha. He is one of Tibet’s most famous meditators and poets, a major figure in the history of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, venerated by all Tibetan schools as an example for the Buddhist life.
According to Milarepa’s biographies, the most well-known written in the 15th century, he was born in western Tibet to a prosperous family. When his father died Milarepa took revenge and many people were killed as a result. Later, feeling regret, Milarepa became a student of Marpa the translator, underwent many hardships and trials and eventually was instructed by Marpa to practice solitary meditation in retreat, where he attained enlightenment and gained fame for his incredible perseverance and spontaneous songs of realization.
