Heruka Vajrasattva
Vajrasattva is shown here visualized in union with his consort, a familiar Tibetan image – sometimes misconceived and mistaken to be erotic art.
The Buddha is often shown as a fatherly monk; here Heruka Vajrasattva has a distinctly physical aspect, serving as a manifestation of the Buddha’s highest spiritual attainment, of enlightenment as the union of wisdom and compassion.
The female represents wisdom of reality, the male – compassion for all sentient beings. The vision of personal energy, altruistic dedication, and total fulfilment reveal and express the core ideal of Tibetan Buddhism.
Vajrasattva and his consort are both shown to be white in color, symbolizing their immaculate purity. Vajrasattva holds a vajra scepter symbolizing method, and a bell symbolizing wisdom. Both father and mother are wearing the silk garments and jeweled ornaments of ancient Indian royalty.
