Green Tara Mantra
Tara’s mantra, Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha translates as: “I prostrate to the Liberator, Mother of all the victorious Ones”.
Om: One’s body, speech and mind can become the enlightened body, speech and mind of a Buddha.
Tare: Liberation from true suffering.
Tuttare: Tara protects sentient beings from eight great fears, each with an outer fear alongside the inner aspect it represents:
Tara who protects us from the flood of attachment,
Tara who protects us from the thieves of wrong views,
Tara who protects us from the lion of pride,
Tara who protects us from the snakes of jealousy,
Tara who protects us from the fire of anger,
Tara who protects us from the carnivorous demon of doubt,
Tara who protects us from the chains of miserliness or greed, and – Tara who protects us from the elephant of ignorance.
While external dangers and fears threaten our life or property, inner fears endanger us spiritually by obstructing us or turning us away from the path to enlightenment. Those are the main dangers. Tuttare liberates sentient beings from the true causes of suffering: karma and delusions. Those are the main dangers.
Ture: Liberating all sentient beings from disease, Tara shows the cessation of suffering, the ultimate Dharma or the truth of emptiness of inherent existence. The actual disease we have is ignorance not knowing the nature of the I. All delusions arise from this ignorance.
Soha: By taking refuge and through introspetive practice, mindfulness and analysis, one can gradually transforming one’s body, speech and mind into Tara’s enlightened body, speech and mind. May it be so!
